Last year, I used a similar technique with SBS, but I quilted the top, batting, backing blocks and then joined the blocks together. Actually, I machine stitched the backs together and ended up hand stitching just one side of the seam between the blocks. It was given to a hospital or I would post a picture. I do like the idea of having it DONE when it's done. I think having the backing all in one piece would take less fabric. What do you think?
I've done it that way, Lucy, but in that case it was with 2inch sashings. Doing it that way with these little blocks and only half inch (or in my case 3/4in) sashings would have produced more bulk in the sashings (and yes, you are right, it would take more backing fabric because of all the seams involved.)

I know how you feel, we have had several days of lovely weather, and I have been tempted, but I am trying to resist. I reason that I am so close now, I will have the rest of the summer to enjoy outside. Besides, we had such a terrible winter, the weeds haven't really got going yet.
